Heat Pump vs. Air Conditioner

May 31, 2024

Spring has sprung and we’re busy quoting A/C’s for our customers. Not that there’s anything wrong with an Air Conditioner, although if you are concerned about Energy Consumption, your electricity bill, or if you would like to add the option of using it for heat in the shoulder seasons. You might want to consider installing a standard Heat Pump instead of an A/C.

What is the cost?

A Heat Pump can be more expensive than the lowest price A/C although when compared to a 2 stage energy efficient A/C the cost is very close. And you get the added feature of using it for heat in the shoulder seasons if needed. These can be great units for your house, shop or even your Seasonal Cottage!

Heating with your Heat Pump

The ability to efficiently heat with a “Standard” Heat Pump, such as a Moovair, can be limited, depending on the model installed, to approximately minus -10 Celsius. If you are looking to use the Heat Pump in the winter then you will want to look at a “Cold Climate” Heat Pump, such as the Trane Resolute Cold Climate Heat Pump. A “Cold Climate” Heat Pump is more expensive than a “standard” Heat Pump due to it’s ability to efficiently heat down to minus -30 Celsius. Please see our blog on “Cold Climate Heat Pumps” for more information.

Cooling with your Heat Pump

A “standard” Heat Pump such as a Moovair, when used instead of an A/C can be very efficient with it’s fully modulating compressor. This is like riding an 18 speed bicycle instead of a single or 2 speed bicycle. We are also noticing that wear and tear is reduced and repairs seem to be less than the standard A/C because of the ease to operate a modulating compressor and fewer cycles on the compressor.

Is there Maintenance?

We are experiencing fewer maintenance calls for Heat Pumps than we do for Air Conditioners. The sheer number of A/C’s out there may have something to do with this although with a fully modulating motor there will be less wear and tear on the internal parts due to gradual starts instead of starting that single speed bicycle on an uphill grade.

Are Monthly Maintenance Memberships Worth the Money? Monthly Maintenance Memberships have features and benefits beyond a simple tune-up, when taken advantage of, these memberships can save the homeowner hundreds or even thousands of dollars. Although they are not for everyone, they are for some. Take my friend Adam for example, this guy can fix just about anything and in the rare chance that he finds himself in a pickle, he knows a guy! Sometimes that guy is even yours truly. Most people do not have “a guy” or the multitude of skills that Adam has and even if they do, they rarely have the time to deal with preventative maintenance in their busy lives. Preventive Maintenance put simply, is about fixing things before they break. Our busy lives tend to take president over remembering to maintain the pumps, motors, fans, filters, and pulleys that provide the comfort in our homes, even though these systems run on average 600 times longer and harder than your vehicle does on an annual basis. Yikes…bet you didn’t know that.
